Butterflies prefer flowers in blossom that smell sweet.
So you may prefer sweet-smelling flowers on your balcony or in your garden. Butterflies really visit balcony flowers to rest on, but not to pass all stages of metamorphosis there.
For metamorphosis they prefer garden places. Please remember to use native flowers because our butterflies do not accept exotic plants.
It is remarkable that the flavour of thyme, sage, lavender and majoram especially attracts the adult butterfly’s attention.
This is a natural reaction of defence against becoming insect fodder. In this case the butterflies prefer what caterpillars dislike.
It is as well remarkable that more than ten different butterfly species come to visit Germany during the summer. They migrate from various parts of Europe to Germany because they cannot bear the climate change in their native countries. One of them is the pigeon tail butterfly that flutters in the same way as a humming bird and visits us during hot summers. Within 5 minutes it visits more than a hundred flowers.
In autumn it is necessary to let leaves lie on the ground as a carpet of leaves for the resting stage of the pupae. Do not dig your patch too often, be careful because of caterpillars and pupae.
